The conflict in Kashmir is no lesser known to anyone. You might have seen many movements and related hashtags around on social media such as #StandwithKashmir #KashmirBleeds #KashmirCurfew #CrimeAgainstHumanity.
Born from the partition of India, the Kashmir conflict is still unresolved, involving the three nuclear powers: Pakistan, India and China. The dispute has continued for more than a decade and involves a patchwork of ethnicities, languages and religions. Since the partition of Pakistan, the Pakistani government is constantly trying to put this matter under UN’s consideration. Kashmiris today are living miserably alongside a huge military presence and ongoing insurgent operations.
In 2003, a ceasefire agreement was made between India and Pakistan, still sometimes the calm is punctuated by military operations and we can’t see any positive result.
Starting from the Mumbai attacks in 2008, there have been several violent incidents between Pakistan and India, with a significant increase in ceasefire violations, eradicating the chances of peace and harmony between the two countries.
Let’s discuss the opinions of Pakistan, India and Kashmir on the matter.
Indian view
According to Indian claims, they own the Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir as Maharaja Hari Singh had signed the Instrument of Accession in October 1947, further supported and verified by the departing British Empire and the Indian Independence Act. India claims that UN had also accepted India’s stand related to all the issues between Pakistan and India in 1948 and according to it, Pakistan had not removed its military forces from the issue that is one of the steps in implementing a resolution.
India had also accused Pakistan of waging a proxy war and funding military groups for promoting instability in the region and igniting anti-India sentiments in the people of Kashmir using media and other channels.
Indian claims further brief that most of the regions of Pakistani Kashmir have people suffering from lack of pollical recognition, basic rights and economic development.
Pakistani view
Pakistan claims to be given Kashmir according to the two-nation theory as it has a Muslim majority and argues that India has disregarded the resolutions of UN commission and security council by not conducting a plebiscite. Pakistan denies all the Indian claims to own Kashmir and emphasizes that Maharaja did not support Kashmiris and Indian troops were already present in Kashmir when the Instrument of Accession was being signed, thereby violating the agreement.
According to Pakistan, the people residing in Kashmir no longer wish to be a part of India and Kashmiri uprising truly demonstrates it. Therefore, Kashmir should either be declared independent or a part of Pakistan.
Kashmir’s public opinion is a bit difficult to guess as the region contains supporters with different perspectives. People of Kashmir have a strong will and spirit to get justice and are struggling for their rights. We hope the issue gets resolved as soon as possible.
